All over Canada, people are taking to the streets and parks to raise money for ALS! ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a progressively paralyzing condition with a prognosis of 2 to 5 years. By attacking the motor neurons in the body, ALS denies the ability to move, speak, smile and, finally, to breathe. It has no known cause, treatment, or cure.

This June, join ALS Ontario at Bayfront Park and walk to raise funds for vital research, and to provide equipment and support for people living with ALS and their families.

Registration opens March 1st! Please click on the links above to visit the Walk for ALS website, or to contact Bob Mullen for more information. Help make moments matter!

The Mad Pride Hamilton Organizing Committee is a group of local community members - self-identifying Mad (as in madness, not an acronym) people and our supporters. It was struck in May 2013 by Hamilton members of the Mad Students Society (www.madstudentsociety.com / www.facebook.com/MadStudentSociety), a national peer support group of students who have experienced the psychiatric system that has been meeting bimonthly at McMaster since September 2012. (Next meeting: July 2nd. Email outreach@madstudentsociety.com to join.)

Mad Pride is an arts, culture, and heritage festival created by psychiatric survivors, consumers, mad people, and folks the world has labeled ‘mentally ill’ to celebrate our lives and community (www.madprideto.com).

The Hamilton Film Festival takes place annually during the first week in November in Hamilton Ontario, home of one of Canada's fastest growing art scenes. The 7-day festival screens a juried selection of local and international films to hundreds of filmmakers, spectators and industry professionals. The Festival's home base is the historic and intimate Staircase Theatre, and has recently partnered with the newly reborn "The Zoetic", a beautiful 300 seat theatre.

Born out of the Staircase Theatre, nurtured by filmmakers, made for filmmakers, we aim to earn the “HAMILTON” in our title. Our filmmakers become alumni and your film never has a shelf life. We will actively promote, share, connect as long as you continue to make films!

Distributors, Exhibitors, art centres and film companies trust the Hamilton Film Festival and work with us annually to help them find the best films and filmmakers.

These are just some of the great things you experience when you screen with the Hamilton Film Festival!

The 9th annual Hamilton Film Festival was the events biggest festival to date. What started as a grassroots local festival in the 67-seat Staircase Theatre has blossomed into an internationally recognized event with four screening venues. To date, the Hamilton Film Festival has not receive any grants or loans and is supported through volunteers, sponsorship, in-kind sponsorship, advertising and ticket sales.

During the 7 day event we were proud to screen films that represented a wide variety of people, cultures and communities including Female filmmakers, LGBT, Jewish, Polish, Aboriginal, Muslim, Francophone, Films made by youth, Asian, Sri-Lankan, Hispanic, European, Australian, South American, people with mental disorders as well as working with local groups like Pathways to Education, local film clubs, organizations and festivals to make the Hamilton Film Festival one of the most diverse and inclusive film festivals in the GTHA.

The Hamilton Film Festival is a submission / selection juried event and many of the films had not yet gained a major reputation or following. Many of our films are local, national or world premieres. While marketing “unknown” films proves to be a challenge, it is a challenge we meet head on as we continue to introduce Hamilton to some of the best films you’ve never heard of. Our BEST SHORT winner this year, DEAD HEARTS, is eligible to submit for an Academy Award nomination while our BEST DOC winner, DAVIDS and GOLIATH, recently won 1st place and a 50,000 prize from the biggest online film festivals. Our programming is world class and on par with several larger film festivals, we’ve been told.

As we enter our 10th year, we will stick with the plan and let things grow as they grow and follow the simple mandate of earning the “Hamilton” in our title.

Nathan Fleet, festival director

The Hamilton Film Festival has been operating since 2004 and is a community focused event that brings 200 local and international films and events each year into Hamilton's historic venues which include The Staircase Theatre, The Zoetic and The Spice Factory. Film screenings, a learning series, a film expo, panel discussions, industry meet-ups and an awards ceremony are all part of the year-round programming. The festival also partners with local groups to introduce young people to the movie-making business from concept to exhibition. The film screenings and events include diverse programming that appeal to a wide variety of audiences and communities.
